What is Root Canal Treatment?

Root canal treatment is needed when the nerve in the middle of your tooth becomes infected and is likely to spread to the rest of your teeth and gums if left untreated.  This infection can occur due to tooth decay, trauma or a crack in the tooth and if left untreated, can cause severe pain.

Root canal treatment is the most efficient way of treating the decay, relieving the pain and most importantly avoiding a tooth extraction (link  to extraction page)whilst avoiding either a painful abscess, or tooth extraction.

Symptoms patients usually experience when needing root canal treatment are pain when eating or chewingswelling of the gum (which signifies abscess infection) or a discolouration of the tooth where it may appear darker than the rest of teeth.

The process involves removing the infected nerve tissue from the root canals by thoroughly cleaning,  disinfecting and filling the area to prevent further bacteria. The final stage involves restoring the tooth by placing a crown (link to crowns page) for protection as well creating a natural looking tooth.
